Creating An AIM Sub Profile Guide

Creating An AIM Sub Profile Guide

Author: Mike Hermansen (Mike aka Don)

Requirements:

1.You must have web space somewhere that you can upload files and link to them.

2.You must have Notepad, WordPad, or the equivalent for other operating systems where you can create text files and save them as .htm or .html files. Front Page Express, or Adobe Page Mill can be used for part of this, but I haven't found way around using Notepad or WordPad for one of the steps you'll need to do.

3.You should have an understanding of some basic HTML, like how to make a webpage with links and so on.

4.You need to have something written within your AIM profile for the screen name that you want to link to your sub profile, so if you've haven't made an AIM profile yet, quickly do this: ***TESTTESTTEST*** so that AIM will create the file info.htm which you will edit later.

Restrictions:

1. You cannot have pictures or background images because they will not be opened by AIM so choose a solid background color.

2. Do not try to make more sub profile pages just yet, which means do not try to link them.

3. Make sure your file is saved as a .htm or .html file.

4. Do not try to add fine details.

Creating Your Sub Profile:

1. If you've gotten everything go find that file Windows 95/98/ME/2000: C:\windows\aim95\"screen name"\info.htm Windows XP and up: C:\Documents and Settings\"User Name"\Application Data\Aim\"Screenname"\info.htm

2. You now need to create a page there's a few possible ways to do this and a few new requirements...
(For people who do not understand html, this entire process will be more challenging) Copy info.htm (edit copy) and then paste it on your desktop. Once you paste it rename it to "Anything".htm. Now open the file in an HTML editing program.
For advanced and HTML fluent people, you can do the same and copy paste and rename or you can create your own webpage but it must be an .htm or .html, I believe, in order for it to work.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR PROFILE NOW!

3. You need to upload your new sub profile file onto your web space. Make sure you have the exact URL to this file.

4. Open Notepad and for those without windows, you should know your text modifying programs which allow you to save .htm and .html files. Now open the file which is your profile, the one called info.htm the original one. You should have a file that has only text starting with "<html>".

*WARNING*

Do not be on AIM while doing the step below because people trying to view your profile may screw up an attempt to save, so just log off now if you are on.

*/WARNING*

5. So now you are looking at your AIM profile with a bunch of extra symbols and code. So find the stuff you typed and you will put the following link somewhere logical but not after the last few things that say "</font> </body> </html>".

Add below in the document:

<A href="http://www.DOMAIN.com/YOUR_FILE.htm" TARGET="_self">Click here for my subprofile</A>

Make sure you have your CORRECT URL between quotes. Once you do this, save the file.

DO NOT EVER EDIT THE HYPERLINK YOU JUST MADE WHILE EDITING YOUR AIM PROFILE, IT'S SPECIAL AND WILL BE DISABLED BY DOING SO
