Cooler Master CoolDrive 6 Review

Step B-00 : These steps are for "Type B" Hard drives only.
Step B-01 : Using only one thermal pad, carefully attach the thermal pad (Diamond down) to the bottom of the hard drive. (Onto of everything [including the chips] and don't cut the pad)
Step B-02 : SLOWLY, Peel off the flat side plastic. Try to move the other hand along side to lessen the "redo" job after the last plastic layer of off.
Step B-03 : Type B only uses one thermal pad
Step 3: Unscrew the 2 screws holding the bottom heatsink to the rest of the chassis. Place a small pen mark at the outer edge on the heatsink (So you can easily tell which direction the hard drive will go)

Step 4: Place the Hard drive between the washers. This is a very snug fit, but it fits at that spot. Line up the holes on both sides and use the longer screws to secure the hard drive in the heatsink.

Step 5: Move all the wires in the chassis to the outer-most part. Place "Ch 1" temp sensor between the chassis and the hard drive, CAREFULLY flip the hard drive over, and place the heatsink back to factory placement. Screw in the heatsink/hard drive.

Step 6: Screw in, Connect all the wiring and install the USB connection.
Cooler Master has included support for both 1.1 and 2.0 in their USB cables, so it doesn't matter which USB header the CD6 takes.
Note: The Connectors make use of USB-1, USB+1, Gnd, VCC1, Gnd. Picture of my motherboard's USB Header - Labeled (MSI Max2-BLR) (White=Unused, Blue=Connector)

Installing the hardware won't be all that difficult for most people. Then again, Most people don't have 6 hard drives and wires out the butt to worry about. The only true problems occurred when trying to use the software that came with this product.

The software looks good, matches the theme of the product's box and is generally very helpful -- Most of the time. However, this program likes to crash on me while renaming channels. If just left alone, running in the background, it sits happily and doesn't crash. Changing some options have caused problems for me though: the individual names of the channels. The only way to exit out of the program is to shut it off from the taskbar or through Task Manager. Task Manager reads CoolDrive6.exe using 26,852K of memory -- That's 27 Mb! This is definitely not meant to be run during gaming. The program isn't all bad stuff though, It does have its good points. I would have liked to see total space to be the total space in the computer, not just one hard drive's capacity.

Cooler Master knows it's all about the bells and whistles, This software runs flawlessly for 99.9% of the time and allows me the option to do what I want. Heck, I can even change the Idle message and Display messages *Evil grin*. Any message can be 26 characters in length: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ, 12345678901234567890123456. Changing the Hard drive to be measured is a snap with a drop-menu and controlling fans is a snap with Up and Down arrows that specify the voltage going to each fan channel. Information about a hard drive is vast with Top Speed, Current Speed, Total Space, Free space, and a graphic representation bar for the used/free space.

Getting to the more physical side of things now. The menu for the CD6 can be quite confusing at first, especially if you don't know what the buttons do. The manual takes care of this problem with a good menu tree explanation. The LCD is backlit, and could've been more responsive with the scrolling effect, the letters tend to blur together when moving. The color of the backlight is bright White. The back button seems to be unresponsive at times also. It looks nice in my horrendously hideous Chieftec dragon case. This is a good product for black (or silver) glossy cases.

While writing this review, the alarm of the CD6 went off a couple of times. The alarm isn't loud enough to be a real problem, but it isn't too silent you will never hear the problem occur. I've included a alarm beep... I had to cause massive heat in my computer for this to even activate the alarm.

Using the software controls and the hardware controls, I was able to turn all my fans completely off; except for the CPU fan, and my north-bridge fan. It made my room just so much more quiet than it was with all the fans at full speed all the time. *Heavenly music plays* It was so beautiful it brought a tear to my eye. I took a nap with the computer on! Something I was not able to do previously.

It looks good, its easy to install, but how is the cooling performance? Well, aside from the fact I can control 3 fans of my own choosing, and getting temperature sensor readings from any 4 places in my case. I can't say is the cooling is better or not; to be honest, the air temp is 76 degrees here (and it feels more like 85 here). 1 = 98.6, 2 = 89.2, 3 = 97.2, 4 = 109.3. When the fans were off - everything was up by (+/-)20 degrees. It sure does cool down the case.

Update: Problem: While reformatting my computer, I ran into a problem with the product. Specifically, Windows claimed that CoolDrive 6 was not connected... when it was lit up and showing fan speeds and hard drive space. Solution: after installing windows and all the normal drivers, remove any "warning symbols" that have to deal with "USB Serial". Reboot. Now it works for me. The COM port was conflicting in some manner, so CD6 decided to kill itself until the owner found it a new home. :)

Conclusion and Rating:

Point 1. The CD6 software could be better, and less buggy. In fact, this is the worst thing of the entire product. Cooler Master could've worked out the bugs with renaming errors, and crashes when the product isn't found physically. (Please note: When Trying to make the software crash, it wouldn't- Just be aware that it may crash when naming things)

Point 2. The Design rules, looks like an expensive Car CD Player

Point 3. The depth of the product is a little longer than normal CD-ROMs and other optical drives

Point 4. An Item that looks cool, performs cooler and give me so much control that it take my attention away for 2 hours. I can sleep Easier (and Quieter) with the CoolDrive 6 in my case, this is a MUST have for all owners and especially gamers.

Good

1. White Bright LED back-lit (could be changed, but I wouldn't risk it with this one)
2. HDD Silencer
3. HDD Cooler
4. Hard drive 5.25 converter
5. I felt at ease knowing the hard drive wont move around at all in the chassis
6. Software is good, looks good and has extras that needed to be there.
7. It's always a good idea to know what the temperature for your case may be. Heat causes problems, and sometimes it's the least suspected cause of a problem.
8. The design does not intrude with the case look. (Personally I feel that this product outshines my case and makes it look even worse than it did before, Its just too good)
9. Plenty of options to make this a serious contender for a fan controller.
10. Comprehensive and helpful instruction booklet.
11. Fairly simple installation. It took about 30 mins for me for the first time to do this project.
12. Seeing any message (under 26 Characters) at a LAN party can be a very interesting thing. "I Want Your First Born"
Bad

1. The Software drags this -otherwise 98 score- down.
2. LCD Blurriness when text scrolls
3. Controlling the CD6 through the LCD menu seems bulky and sometimes unresponsive
Extremely Bad

1. The Software needs to be updated
