Description

This is the ultimate preference of Pro Gamers. The greater size of this pad has been especially determined by the most critical user - YOU! The Steelpad 4S mouse pad is a specially treated aluminum surface that delivers the smoothest gaming surface on the market. Your mouse easily glides across the 4S, which is designed to reduce friction, making your mouse movements more accurate, and ideally increasing your precision/aim. It is constructed of 3.5 mm thick aluminum, which makes for a slick, cool surface. The dimensions of the Steelpad 4s Mouse pad is 11.42"(L) x 10.24" (W) x .14" (thick). This pad includes a set of Padsurfers (Mouse Skates) to prevent friction and a non-stick pad to prevent the mouse pad from sliding.

For the ultimate in gaming, select the option for the friction reducing Steel gaming glove specially made by the same company that makes Steelpads. It helps to reduce friction, and also helps to grip the mouse better.

Intro

I bought this mouse pad for my home computer desk, which was in need of a good gaming surface. My desk was suffering a "Bubblely" fate from over-use.

I have lost track of how many mouse pads I have had in my entire life. Hopefully, the Steelpad 4S will be the golden, magical mouse pad that will not get muddy, easy to transport, easy to do my jobs. When I mentioned "Mouse pad that will not get muddy", I collectively mean dirt, dry skin, oils, sweat; everything that is just nothing less than "Muddy."

This pad isn't cheap, heck, its not even mid-price. The Steelpad 4S, overall is the most expensive mouse pad I have ever seen. You will need to shell out a cool $44 dollars for this mouse pad.

Packaging and First Thoughts

At first glimpse the packaging is very thin at 10 1/8in * 1/4in * 11 1/2 (Height*Width*Length). Its a mouse pad, its supposed to be slim.

The package was wrapped in normal plastic; basically just Stronger Syran Wrap. After unwrapping the plastic from the main box, it's easy to see the box itself wasn't made for any long-term pounding (Before and possibly after this review I would have used this box as a mouse pad). The sides were cut Periodically so I would have been able to rip the box without any problems. Just as I was about to ripped the sides open, I spotted the back. The Back of the box had a tab that would allow users to gain easy access and not make a mess.

After opening the back of the box, there was a strange... black sparkle mesh. Being the genius I am with computers, I thought this might be a useable mouse surface [Hey, its worth a try]. I ended up wrong, this black rubber was not made for mousing - It failed (Horrendously) to bring better movement to 2 ball mice, and 2 Optical mice. Puzzled, I placed the solid aluminum metal piece on top of the black rubber. BINGO! We've got a match. The black rubber was made to keep the metal piece from moving around. The Rubber was made slightly smaller than the metal piece (about 1/16in around).

The aluminum pad is really light. It's also very sturdy at the same time. How study you ask? This pad can be made into a not-so-handy knife, Perfect for those times at a party to defend your seat or to simply cut a sandwich (I [naturally] can't guarantee anything when you make this pad into a knife, and I don't condone any violent actions-- but it's fun!). The first side has a emblem "4S steel" on the bottom left. The Second side is exactly the same, Except this side does not have any logos on it.

The box does not include directions, and personally I don't see any reason for there to be directions. To put it simply in steps:
  1. Place the flexible surface on any (reasonably) flat surface, also close enough to the computer (or wireless point) so a mouse can reach.
  2. Put the hardest pad on the flexible surface.
  3. Put the mouse on the pad.
  4. Begin your experience.

The only logo on the pad + The method of use
The Mouse + pad combination alone causes a few problems.
  1. A "soft, scratching-Hissing" noise. (Headphones, or Loud music will drown this out)
  2. The Mouse pad is Extremely cold to touch
  3. Any thumb, hand prints stay on for a long while. (But the 4S is washable)
Thankfully, the Steelpad 4S includes some extra goodies: 4 Inches worth of Padsurfers, and the directions to Padsurfers.

The pad itself consumes a lot of space. This is a great thing for me, I use a lot of space for moving my mouse. However, for those without so much room, this isn't the pad for them.

What is this "Steel Padsurfer"?

"Steelpad Padsurfer is made of solid Teflon tape and is developed especially for the Steelpad surface." - Xoxide.com

The included padsurfer

Applying the Padsurfer requires scissors, and a finger nail (A toothpick was easier to apply with). Cut a piece large enough for the mouse feet. Remove the sticky red stripe. Apply the red sticky stuff to the feet of the mouse. Overall, the surfers improved the "scratching" level of the noise by half, and the mouse seems to move about 40% easier.
